Last year, Brazil ranked 5th in terms of countries with tourists visiting the United States.  An estimated 1.2 million Brazilians traveled to the United States in 2010.  Furthermore, the number of Brazilian tourists coming to the U.S. every year is expected to increase by about 12 percent over the next 3 years.

With protests in Brazil and the U.S. over adding Brazil to the U.S.’s Visa Waiver Program, experts are speculating that Brazil could be the 37th country to be added to the list.  The VWP allows tourists from other countries to visit the U.S. for 90 days or less without a visa.

In addition, if Brazil is added to the list, U.S. tourists would most likely not need visas to visit Brazil due a reciprocity clause.

According to The New York Times, more and more frequently patients in the United States waiting for organ donations have been delayed by the red tape surrounding obtaining a visa.  Doctors and others in the medical community say that the wait for organ donors living in another country to get a visitor visa have increased since restrictions on visas were tightened after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

“When patients need a transplant, most of the time, the first people they turn to is their families.  It becomes complicated when their families are not in the U.S., which in a lot of instances, that is the case,” said Dr. Juan Carlos Caicedo, Director of the Hispanic Transplant Program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

In cases like these, an organ donor that is not a U.S. citizen and is living out of the country needs to obtain a B-1 or B-2 visa.  These visas are more commonly referred to as visitor or tourist visas.  When applying for the visa, if there is a medical situation, an individual can request that the visa be expedited.
