Spanish-language E-Verify Self Check now available in CA

Posted on August 17th, 2011 No Comments

The E-Verify Self Check program is now being offered in Spanish in 16 additional states. Originally, the program, which launched in March, was only offered in Spanish in five states and the District of Columbia.

The added states include California, Texas, Louisiana, Maryland, Nebraska, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, South Carolina, Ohio, Utah, Washington, Minnesota, New Jersey, Nevada, and Missouri.

Employers use E-Verity to validate workers’ Form 1-9s and eligibility to work in the United States. The Self Check program allows workers to check their employment status online through the USCIS and Social Security Administration.

USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas said of the expansion, “By offering Self Check to Spanish speakers and making services more widely available, USCIS makes good on a promise to streamline and protect the integrity of the E-Verify process for employees and employers alike.”

Workers may check work status online

Posted on March 22nd, 2011 No Comments

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that immigrant workers and prospective workers in 5 states and the District of Columbia will be able to check their immigration status online.  The program is called E-Verify Self Check and identifies if a worker’s information has been correctly recorded with the government or if there have been any errors.

According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, workers who are said to be ineligible to work by E-Verify have 8 days to clear up any issues.  Currently, the program is available to people in Arizona, Virginia, Colorado, Mississippi, Idaho, and Washington D.C.  The U.S. Department of Homeland Security hopes to have the program expanded to all states in 12 months.

San Francisco teen allowed 6-month stay to prepare for immigration trial

Posted on January 7th, 2011 No Comments

Yesterday, a San Francisco teenager was granted six months to stay in the country and prepare for her immigration case.  The teen, 18-year old Elizabeth Lee, her brother and her mother immigrated to the United States from Peru in 2000.  Lee graduate from Lowell High School in San Francisco and was accepted to atten the University of California at Berkeley for this past fall.

Officials from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained Lee’s mother, Melissa Lee, in June.  Lee was released but officials said that the family would be deported from the country on January 19th.

Officials from the ICE granted the six-month stay this week on humanitarian grounds and because Lee has a strong case to stay in the country.  A spokesperson for a rally held in Elizabeth Lee’s honor just said of the extra time, “We believe she has a strong case to remain in the country lawfully.  This will allow her to reopen the case so that new evidence can be put forward”.

Florida woman indicted for making fake visas

Posted on December 8th, 2010 No Comments

Last month, a Florida woman was indicted for creating and handing out fake visas and other falsified immigration documents.  Flavia Marichal, a notary and paralegal running her own immigrations consultation business in Naples, Florida, was arrested and released from jail with a $400,000 bond.

Marichal reportedly filed the false documents with the Department of Labor and Customs & Immigrations saying that the workers were getting jobs at Hotel Escalante in Collier County.  In actuality, the hotel knew nothing of Marichal or the workers for whom she was trying to obtain worker’s visas and labor certifications.  Marichal obtained information on the workers and created the falsified documents by placing an ad in the newspaper for job openings at the hotel.
