Legislators fight for return of illegal immigrant drivers’ licenses

Several California legislators are fighting for the return of drivers’ licenses for illegal immigrants. A bill allowing for the creation and use of illegal immigrant drivers’ licenses was instated in 2002, but later repealed by Governor Schwarzenegger. The effort is the eighth time lawmakers have proposed the drivers’ licenses.

Research shows that allowing drivers’ licenses for illegal immigrants lowers insurance rates. Both New Mexico and Utah have similar laws in place. The current bill has the support of Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck who stated, “It improves public safety because we know that if our motorists are licensed, they know the rules of law, and if they’re tested we’re more sure they know the rules, and if they’re uninsured we know there are more responsible drivers.”
