On October 5th, the Department of State opened their annual “Green Card Lottery” which awards 50,000 non-citizens a green card and the chance to become permanent residents of the United States.  The Department of State holds the lottery to create a more diverse country and only awards the green cards to immigrants from countries with low immigration rates into the U.S..

Non-citizens are able to enter the lottery until November 3, 2010 and winners will be notified from May to July 2011.  Approximately 12 million people enter the lottery every year.  The 50,000 winners are selected at random.
