L-1A vs. L-1B Visas

L-1A intracompany transferee visas are reserved for executives and managers of international corporations that have branches or subsidiaries in the United States or wish to start a qualified affiliate company in the U.S.

On the other hand, L-1B visas are meant for employees with specialized knowledge or skills. L-1B visas allow a specialized worker to come to a U.S. branch of a foreign company, or to share special knowledge or skills to start a U.S. branch.

Qualifications for L-1A and L-1B Visas

For both L-1 visa types, the employee must have a legitimate relationship with a qualifying branch or affiliate of an international company. He or she must also have been an employee of the international company abroad for at least one continuous year out of the past three years. Additionally, it is important to note that the employer must file form I-129 with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.
