The Naturalization Test
Even if you were not born in the United States, you can still become a citizen through naturalization. The naturalization process involves a certain amount of paperwork as well as a naturalization test. This test is meant to make sure that you can use the English language and understand your civic duty as a U.S. citizen.
Applying for naturalization can be a complicated process. If you want to reach your goal of becoming a U.S. citizen, you should not let this stand in your way. - Ability to read and comprehend 1 out of 3 English sentences
- Ability to write 1 out of 3 sentences in understandable English
- Ability to speak English in a way that clearly answers that naturalization officer’s questions regarding your application
- Ability to answer 6 out of 10 civics questions correctly, which include questions about US history and our government
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) provides study materials to help you pass your naturalization test. However, if you do not pass your test the first time, USCIS allows you to retake the test when you reapply.
