The Naturalization Process

Non-U.S. citizens can obtain several different permits so that they can stay and live in the United States. Work visas, green cards, tourist visas, and student visas are but a few of those permits. However, if you want to become a U.S. citizen so that you do not have to worry about constantly meeting the standards of your visa and reapplying for the permit, you must become naturalized.

The naturalization process can be complicated since it has different requirements based on your permanent resident status, familial ties, and military service. For help in achieving your dreams of becoming a U.S. citizen, contact an Orange County immigration attorney from Garg & Associates, P.C. today at 949-540-6704.

General Requirements for Naturalization

While the requirements for becoming a citizen can change depending on factors listed above, among others, there are some general requirements for becoming naturalized, including:

  • Permanent residency status for at least 5 years, or married to a U.S. citizen for at least 3 years
  • Being at least 18 years of age when you fill out the Application for Naturalization
  • Ability to demonstrate physical presence and continued permanent residence
  • Good moral character
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand basic English
  • Knowledge of U.S. history and government

Additionally, you must be able to show attachment to the U.S. Constitution and take an oath of allegiance to the United States.
