The Green Card
Second to actual citizenship, the green card, or United States Permanent Resident Card, is the most coveted item for an individual wishing to permanently live in the United States. The green card declares that the person in question has the status of an alien in permanent residence.
The green card gets its name from the original identification cards for permanent residents who were not yet citizens which were green in color.
Waiting on a Green Card
For many people wishing to live in the United States, the process of naturalization involves a good deal of blood, sweat, and tears. It is not easy to immigrate to the United States and the process typically requires the expert legal help of a seasoned immigration attorney.
There are a number of different types of visas which can allow for residence in the United States for various reasons, but they are all temporary except for the green card.
Applying for a green card is often a long and arduous process, but applicants can obtain two invaluable permits while they are waiting to see if they will be granted permanent residence. There permits are:
- Employment Authorization Document–this allows for legal employment in the United States
- Advance Parole–this document allows the individual to re-enter the United States
