The English Comprehension Test
The English portion of the naturalization test is divided into three main categories: speaking, reading, and writing. Together, these exams demonstrate your ability to comprehend English and communicate effectively in this language. The three different English portions work as follows:
- Speaking – a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officer will conduct an interview with you in English, asking questions and expecting you to answer in a clear and understandable fashion.
- Writing – the USCIS officer will read you three different sentences in English, and you will have to transcribe one of the three sentences.
- Reading – you will choose from one of three sentences to read to the USCIS officer in a way that shows that you understand what you are reading.
USCIS offers study materials to help applicants with this portion of the naturalization test. For help with the legal aspects of your application, contact an experienced Orange County naturalization attorney from Garg & Associates, P.C.
