K-1 Fiancé Visas
A K-1 visa grants a non-U.S. citizen lawful entry into the United States to join his or her American fiancé, under the condition that he or she marry his or her U.S. citizen petitioner within 90 days of entering the country. If the marriage does not occur within 90 days of the alien entering the country, then he or she must leave the US within 30 days. Fortunately, many K-1 visas are approved, and most couples will perform the wedding within 90 days, which allows an immigrant spouse a pathway to becoming a lawful permanent resident of the United States.

Requirements for Obtaining a K-1 Fiancé Visa
In order to obtain a K-1 visa, both fiancés must be eligible to be legally wed in the state of residence of the U.S. petitioner. This means that each partner must be legally of age and cannot be married to anyone else. Additionally, the couple must have met each other in person at least once within the 2 years before the K-1 visa petition was filed. Finally, the applicants must show that they will be upstanding members of the community who are unlikely to become public charges.
