Immigration and the REAL ID Act
In order to improve national security, the federal government has created several laws that restrict access to certain forms of identification documents. These laws are meant to keep unwanted individuals from gaining the proper documents to enter and freely move around the country. As a result of these modifications, many immigrants and foreign nationals living in the United States have faced a slew of new difficulties.
If you have encountered challenges due to the REAL ID Act or simply want to take steps to ensure that you do not, it is advisable to consult with a skilled and experienced lawyer. Contact the Orange County immigration attorneys of Garg & Associates, P.C., by calling 949-540-6704.
Changes Created by the REAL ID Act
Passed in 2005, the REAL ID Act enhanced security and increased the level of scrutiny focused upon immigrants and foreign individual living or working within the United States. In particular, this law did the following:
- Increased the difficulty of obtaining a driver’s licenses
- Allowed deportation for terrorist activities
- Increased the difficulty of filing for asylum
- Changed limitations on work visas
Many people trying to work inside the United States have found increased difficulty in obtaining a driver’s license. This has, in turn, made it difficult in many instances to obtain employment or to perform the duties associated with one’s job.
